He will NEVER live this down....!

I got a call from Jackson's principal one morning shortly after Thanksgiving. I have never received a call from the principal before, and my heart skipped a beat when she identified herself. I think that's a common reaction because she quickly told me that Jackson is okay, and there wasn't an emergency! She continued to choose her words very carefully by telling me this was a rare circumstance and they were very concerned, etc. etc. All the while I was just wishing she would spill it. What finally became of all of the mysteriousness boils down to her asking if we could benefit from being one of the school's Sub-for-Santa families! I didn't know whether to burst into tears from embarrassment or laughter. It took some effort to compose myself and inquire if this concern was due to Jackson's holey shoes. As you can see from the picture, they had seen better days. Despite Jackson owning 3 other pairs of shoes that currently fit him, he continually sacrificed comfort to the attention his ridiculous shoes offered him. The principal, again, searched for words and then finally admitted that one of the teachers at recess had brought the shoes to her attention. I explained Jackson to her, how he refuses to wear a coat in 20 degree weather, how he immediately rips holes in every new pair of pants he gets, won't brush his teeth unless threatened, the list goes on. This very kind principal explained that her son was the same way, and that she understood completely. There was some explaining to do for Jackson's teacher too because apparently Jackson has been begging for food from the "school lunch" kids telling them that I only put a plum in his lunch! I could see a case being built against us!

I called James at work to tell him what awful parents we are, and he couldn't even understand me because I was laughing so hard. Don't get me wrong, I am soooo thankful that we live in an awesome community with people who watch out for each other. It's so comforting to know that the teachers at school are so concerned with the well being of their students. But...to have them call and think we are in need due to poor grooming habits of my child is just a horrible reflection on us as parents!

I also had to call my good friend whose son is in Jackson's class, because her son has holes in his shoes too! We laughed until we were both crying. Later that day she locked her keys in the car and I picked her up from the store on my way to pick up the boys from school. When they got in the car, she asked Jackson how his shoes were doing. He said the soles fell out at recess that day! We asked if anyone notices or asks about his shoes. His answer was "Of course, EVERYONE talks about my shoes!"

I had to tell Jackson about the Principal's phone call in order to get him to throw the shoes away. When I told him that the teachers think he is a needy kid, he fell to the floor laughing and sad " I'm not needy, I just like to wear holey shoes!"

See what I get to deal with! I'm afraid it's hereditary, from the Williamson side! And to clarify what I mean by that, James and some other members of the Williamson clan have been known to hang on to their holey, tattered, discolored clothing to the point of ridiculousness also :)

Christmas Trees with the Palmers...

We were thrilled to have a visit from the Palmers while they were in town for Thanksgiving! The kids made sugar cookie Christmas Trees and had their fill of candy, again! We're so glad that they didn't move to far away, because we LOVE them.

Oh my...

Gingerbread Houses...

My brother, Luke's birthday is the day after mine (we are 9 years apart though!). We got together for dinner and gingerbread house making the night before Thanksgiving to celebrate our birthdays. I went to Winco to get the candy for our houses, and they had an incredible selection! It was so fun picking out candy that just seemed to be made for gingerbread houses. As always, our kids loved playing with their cousin Peter. It's fun to imagine that pretty soon we will have two more cousins/nephews to share in the family fun :)

Our Turkey-less Thanksgiving of 2012...

This year we tried to instill some thankfulness in our kids. Instead of a big feast, we ran the "Human Race" 5K as a family, and the proceeds went to the local food bank. It was so cool to see all of the families running the race at 8am on Thanksgiving morning and to think of all of the money going to help those less fortunate. And, we had lots of fun and made some memories. Paul was throwing up (I'm sure due to all of the candy he ate from gingerbread houses the night before!), but he really wanted to go still. So, I got to carry him on my back for 90% of the race! In the meantime, James pushed Alanna and Blaze in our back to back double stroller (not a jogging stroller mind you!) Jackson did a great job and ran ahead of James and got a pretty good finish time for his first 5K. We found out a couple weeks later that Alanna and Blaze both won 2nd place for their age division! They had have medals for them at the Food Bank, and James is very proud to be the "horse" that pushed them to 2nd place. His first response was "we would have come in 1st place if everyone hadn't kept fussing about Blaze!" What happened is he was running full speed but didn't bother to strap Blaze in. At some point, Blaze stood up and fell out and James ran him over with the stroller! My poor baby! He got scraped up on his face and had a bloody nose, but James placed him back into the stroller, unstrapped, and continued to run. Apparently, for some strange reason, many adults expressed some concern over the situation! I don't think I'll trust James with my babies next year, even if they did win 2nd place!
The only turkey we saw this year were the candy kind!
We had each of the kids make a turkey hand print on their race shirt, and we wrote what they were Thankful for on it. Alanna's list ranged from candy canes to string cheese to our house!
My sweet angel baby's first response was "Jesus"! That just melted my heart!
Paul is very thankful for food! You would never know that our skinny twerp is constantly eating!
Jackson was "too cool" to paint his shirt.
We love to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving day Parade every year. The day was so relaxing as we watched "A Christmas Story", and played games and just enjoyed one another.
